Rick Edmonds is the media business analyst for the Poynter Institute where he has done research and writing for the last 20 years. He was also co-author, starting in 2004 of the newspaper chapter of the first 10 years of Project for Excellence in Journalism’s State of the News Media report. Some of his work to date has included studies and stories on newspaper staffing levels, news expenditures per subscriber, readership, circulation and online metrics, and new business models for the industry.  More recently he has tracked the growth of the nonprofit local news sector and digital successes like Politico and Business Insider.

He is frequently quoted on business and journalism topics in outlets including NPR and the Washington Post.

Edmonds has presented his work at annual meetings of the American Society of News Editors, the News Media Alliance and to international groups in Paris, Norway, Chile. Madrid, and Vienna.

He spent 11 years with the St. Petersburg Times organization in various editor and publisher roles, including two years as managing editor of the paper’s Tampa edition.  Earlier in his career he was James Reston’s assistant at the New York Times and a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer where he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in national reporting in 1982.  He earned a B.A. from Harvard College in 1969.  His wife, Marianne, is a municipal finance advisor, and they have two adult daughters.
