Oct 29, 2020 Roni Wood Saving Pedestrian Lives.
Roni Wood was first introduced to Best Foot Forward “BFF” one year ago after being struck by a driver in February,2018. She will share her personal story of a one-year recovery and how she is turning her pain into her purpose to keep pedestrians safe.
Every seven minutes in America a person walking is struck by a car or truck. No more is the problem more severe than in Central Florida where two people are injured every day and one is killed every week while doing something as simple as walking down the street.
According to Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design Report, Central Florida is ranked the #1 most dangerous place for pedestrians to walk in the nation. Yes, the entire nation. When Roni heard this, she knew she had to do something about it, so she joined Best Foot Forward/ Bike Walk Central Florida as Community Outreach Specialist to help educate the public. Best Foot Forward has partnered together with city & county governments, local law enforcement, health professionals, school administrators, transportation planners and more to change these numbers.
Best Foot Forward launched in 2012 in Orange County, 2017 in Osceola County and October,2019 in Seminole County, Florida. They kicked off enforcement operations #OperationBFF on February 18, 2020. It was the largest “operation by far. Over 300 citations and warnings were given out in just a few hours to drivers in Seminole County who did not yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk. This operation runs quarterly and with each cycle they are certainly bringing more awareness.
